Literary edition
Why it changed
A literary review found that repetition, an overly literal prophecy, and several complete explanations were doing too much of the reader's thinking. This edition preserves the architecture and moral tension while allowing more uncertainty to remain alive.
Changes from version 2
- Removes roughly seven percent of the manuscript, chiefly repeated explanations and lesser aphorisms.
- Restrains the prophecy's capitalization and changes its collapse prediction into the falsifiable warning that a temple still answers to the ground.
- Lets Pell's expected first failure hold while an unmapped water channel produces the actual collapse, preventing the disaster from vindicating every prior claim.
- Makes Varos's final self-diagnosis less complete and compresses the later lessons so readers must do more of the judgment themselves.
- Preserves the fourteen-section structure, the Common House resolution, and the closing line.

Responsibility edition
Why it changed
The original festival sequence did not make the boundary between Ansel's authority, the Council's decision, and the crowd's freedom precise enough. The revision makes responsibility legible without giving Ansel powers he did not possess.
Changes from version 1
- Shows Ansel requesting closure, losing the Council vote, recording his dissent, and closing every place within Survey Office authority.
- Replaces his abstract acceptance of public choice with a concrete refusal to improvise a physical seizure of the central hall while he continues warning readers at the gate.
- Tightens the final historical sequence and ends on “The compass still pointed.”
- Adds prerendered HTML and dedicated social metadata so the story remains readable and discoverable without relying on client-side JavaScript.
